So Many Computers!

At BNBL when I first started in 1993 there were 52 members of staff (not all full time of course!) to cover the Central Library, the Mobile and Bath branches. The minimum number of staff on duty for the day at Bath was 16. If we fell below that number we were really stuck!

That was 5 staff on the counter / shelving, 3 staff on the enquiry desk, 1 staff on the children’s desk and 8 staff working out the back. We all swapped roles after lunch!

There used to be huge queues at the counter in the morning and the evening (we were open to 8pm) and a constant stream at the enquiry desk.

BLCMP was the computer system when I first started. I remember being astonished when I arrived to see that there were seven computers in the workroom. I had never seen so many computers in one place!
