The Essex Serpent by Sarah Perry

The Essex Serpent book cover

A brilliant first introduction to Sarah Perry as an author. She has a beautiful, Gothic writing style, which works perfectly with the story of Cora Seaborne and her son, Francis, as they move to the village of Aldwinter, in Essex, and discover that a ‘sea serpent’ of sorts has apparently returned to that village. This is one of the first books I’ve finished in a day as an adult, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. It is incredibly character driven, which is something I love, and those characters are richly developed throughout the book. Highly recommended for fans of Gothic, delicately written fiction.
