Anna Karenina by Leo Tolstoy

Anna Karenina book cover

When it’s winter and you have the time to dive into a big novel that will keep you awake and busy during long hours, I strongly recommend a Big Classic.

This one transports you to Russia where you can feel the atmosphere of this nation -continent from another time (19th Century). The St Petersburg and Moscow high society, its intrigues, parties, bear hunt and afternoon ice skating.

The main character Anna Karenina, spouse and mother, is going to be swept away by a passion with a Count younger than her. We follow as well a wife and her fight against the infidelity of her husband, the young Kitty who is making her first appearance in Society, and the quiet and solitary Levin. Each chapter giving the main stage to one of them. Tolstoy put many families and couple at the heart of his book, he managed brilliantly to give us a look at their lives, occupations and thoughts, being scrutinised by their relatives and acquaintance. I found common places with many of the characters, it makes them very much alive and touching.

If you don’t have the time or the will to be swept away by this story, you can still enjoy the DVD version we also have : Anna Karenina by Joe Wright ( Director of Moulin Rouge, Pride and Prejudice, and Atonement)with Keira Knightley, Jude Law, Aaron Johnson, Domhnall Gleeson, ….Beautifully performed.
